Jasmin slipped into the drivers side of her blue hatchback, while Aarti slid into the passenger seat. They both buckled in, and Jasmin turned the key in the ignition to start the engine, while Aarti placed a CD into the deck, and adjusted the volume of the song to a melodious whisper.
“Oh my goodness Jasmin, he was so beautiful. I was trying so hard to play it cool.” Aarti couldn't stop moving, she begin playing with the silver ring on her thumb, moving it from her thumb to her ring finger and back.
“Then why didn't you give him your number, silly girl?” Jasmin asked raising her eyebrows.
“I wanted to, but I didn’t want to come across too eager. He makes me feel so…. um….”
“Nervous, fluttery, discombobulated?” Jasmin teased smiling.
“All of the above!” Aarti sighed, she settling back into her seat. “I’m scared. He’s from England. It’s a different world. I’m so comfortable here. My life is here, my friends are here. It would be silly for me to fall for a guy who lives so far away, and what if he's charming and wonderful here, but a serial killer at home?”
“Aarti some of your concerns are relevant and some are complete and total rubbish, let’s go through this systematically. Yes your life, work, studies, friends are here; but, new work can be found, studies can be finished abroad and friends and family can visit and with Skype and FaceTime the world is so much smaller. However, he is obviously presenting his best self to you at the moment, and like any normal person when he is at home or stressed he may behave differently, so perhaps get to know him and ask some hard questions. Find out how he acts in high stress situations, take him rock climbing or something and see how he reacts. Lastly I don't think he's a serial killer, he's too pretty for that!”
“He is pretty isn't he?” Aarti gushed “Did you see his eyes, they were hazel, with green and yellow specs, and he's so tall. I always wanted a tall husband…”
“Slow your roll hun. I didn't look as deeply into his eyes as you did obviously but you need to step back emotionally. You don't want to be disappointed if things don't work out.”
“Why wouldn't things work out?” Aarti asked belligerently.
“Honey, I hope everything will work out” Jasmin said soothingly, “but you need to have low expectations for self preservation, you don't want to rush into anything. It’s already quite awkward because his parents, your parents and his grandparents are involved… tread carefully this is not a guy you can date, and get to know over a period of years, you have limited time so you need to make every meeting count. Let’s make a list of questions for you to ask tomorrow, and then we can take it from there.”
“That’s a good idea.” Aarti extracted a notebook and pen from her handbag, “Okay what shall I ask?”
