“You’re back early.” Varun was surprised to see his friend back so soon. He paused the football game he was playing on the console. “You overdid the charm and scared her off didn’t you?”
“I’ve been gone for three hours, in what world is that soon?” Raj countered as he sat down on the sofa and grabbed the other controller. He restarted the game and they began to play.
“In the world where you buy her breakfast… I wasn’t expecting you to be back until tomorrow.” Varun chuckled.
“Dude, I don’t know where to start… This is not England, we did not go out for dinner and her name is not Payal.”
“Did you mention Payal in front of her?” Varun paused the game again and looked his friend square in the eye.
“Why would I mention Payal? She means nothing to me.” Raj asked incredulously, while resuming the game.
“You’ve dated her for two years on and off, she’s a fairly important factor. Especially because you are doing this bullshit friend thing with her. you know the girl wants you to marry her and have her babies!” Varun sniggered at his own joke.
“We aren’t seeing each other any more and no way are we having babies together. She’s not my type dude. The minute we break up she’s out on the pull. I don’t want a nun for a wife, but I definitely want someone with self respect.” Raj had loved Payal once and her ability to bounce back had hurt him deeply.
“So what did you discuss?” Varun asked while tapping furiously on the controller.
“She asked some seriously intrusive questions about whether I have any illegitimate kids… I’ll be honest, it was a turn off, until she mentioned it was her friend Jas that suggested she ask. I want a woman who can think for herself… maybe she’s too young?!”
“Well according to ‘The rule of 7’, she’s not too young…” Varun smirked
“What’s ‘The rule of 7’?” Raj asked distractedly.
“Google it, I’m not your secretary.” Varun paused the game and tossed the laptop at Raj.
Raj typed ‘The rule of 7 with regards to age’ into the search engine and the read aloud the statement that had appeared-
“According to this rule, the age of the younger person should not be less than half the age of the older person plus seven years, so that (for example) no one older than 65 should be in a relationship with anyone younger than 39 and a half, no one older than 22 should be in a relationship with anyone younger than 18”
“Ok, so I’m 26, so divide that by two and add seven and thats 20, so technically i can date, marry, whatever her. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that in this instance she didn’t have the ability to think for herself, and was heavily influenced by her friend.”
“I thought you said the friend was hot” Varun questioned “I was really looking forward to meeting her.”
“She was hot. I just don’t appreciate her opinion on my character.” Raj said emphatically while placing the laptop on the table. He stood up and walked towards the large mirror and began fixing his hair.
“Dude stop over reacting. That’s not a psycho question, its perfectly reasonable to assume we live in the west and have different acceptable norms, and plus if Miss India’s hot, she’s allowed to be slightly psycho! Anyway, did you guys get past the other peoples kids issue and discuss potentially your kids?” Varun loved watching Raj squirm, and the subject of kids always resulted in Raj looking very uncomfortable.
“No we didn’t discuss kids, we did flirt though! It was nice, we talked about her life over here, her ambitions of becoming a GP, my life, my work, it was a good first date. I’ve asked her out again, so hopefully things are progressing.” Varun’s eyes glazed over, the poor guy looked thoroughly bored. Raj felt terrible, his friend had come all the way to India, and all they’d done is gossip about his love life and play video games. Raj walked over to Varun, “Come on bro, lets you and me go out on a date… I’ll fill you in on the whole thing over dinner!”
Varun jumped up out of his seat and jogged toward his suite “I thought you’d never ask!” he stage whispered as they exited the room…
