Chapter 37 - Wednesday 11.30am

“Raj, come here!” Mrs Gupta’s voice carried through the apartment.

Raj was hiding out in Varun’s suite, hoping to avoid his parents. He hadn’t moved all morning, knowing that the conversation with his father would not be pretty.

“Dude, do you want me to go with you? He might go easier on you if I’m there.” Varun asked, fervently hoping Raj would let him stay where he was.

“Nah man. Appreciate the offer, but I made my bed. Better go lie in it!” Raj stood up and started walking towards the door. “On second thoughts, if I’m not back in fifteen minutes, then come rescue me.”

Raj walked towards the dining table. Apparently everyone had decided to wait for him for brunch. His grandmother and mother sat opposite one another, while his grandfather sat at the head of the table. Dr Gupta on his right and an empty seat for Raj on the left.

“Where’s Varun?” Mrs Gupta asked.

“In his suite, I thought you wanted to speak to me.” Raj responded as he kissed his grandmother on the forehead.

“Yes but Varun hasn’t had breakfast.” She turned to the maid and asked her to go and call Varun.

Raj shook hands with his father and grandfather and kissed his mother on the cheek as he sat in his seat. “So how is everyone this morning?” he asked breezily.

“A little embarrassed.” Dr Gupta said, without missing a beat. “My son decided to make me look a fool in front of one of my best friends last night.”

“You told me it was normal in India to meet several girls. So that’s what I was doing.” Raj responded frankly.

“I didn’t say it was normal to go for dinner to someone’s home and then leave without having a bite to eat or saying goodbye to your host!” his father said, with a substantial level of irritation now evident in his voice.

“In all fairness Dad, Aarti didn’t even bother to greet me. I felt like an unwanted guest. Your friend’s daughter lacks basic manners.” Raj’s grandmother handed Raj a plate brimming with food.

Varun walked in and kissed the ladies, shook hands with the men and sat himself next to Raj’s grandmother.

“Good morning Varun. Look Raj, I know she was rude, but she isn’t my problem. I have no expectations of you with regards to marrying her. In fact I no longer think she is suitable for this family. But the way you behaved does reflect badly on us.” Dr Gupta said.

Raj’s grandfather interjected “Son, don’t make such a drama about it. It wasn’t a formal dinner, it was a dinner party. Guests come and go. No harm done.”

“When you say she’s not suitable, do you mean that you would have a problem if I were to say i still liked her?” Raj asked shocked. He didn’t understand why his parents became so autocratic whenever they set foot in India. In England, like most Indians of his generation, he was quite independent and that was the way he liked it. He took a bite of his breakfast, trying his best to maintain a nonchalant exterior, while seething on the inside.

“I’m saying that I want you to have nothing more to do with Aarti. I don’t understand why you’re asking this question anyway we both know you are seeing the Singh girl, you’re both plastered all over the society pages.” Dr Gupta passed the paper to Raj.

There, in print, was a pixelated image of Raj on Priti’s doorstep with her hands on his shoulder and her lips on his cheek. Beneath the picture there were a few lines which Raj read out loud. “Priti Singh and Raj Gupta, a match made in financial heaven. Priti of  ‘Singh Group’, is betrothed to Raj Gupta, sole heir to the Gupta property empire. Our sources say an engagement announcement is due this week after a whirlwind courtship that has swept Priti off her feet and right into this international hero’s arms!” Raj was stunned. “You realise this is completely and totally fabricated!”

“Of course the article is, but the picture looks pretty real…” his mother said with a smile on her face.

“She was giving me the brush-off, mother!” Raj tried to explain.

“So why was she kissing you?” asked his grandmother, confused.

“This is so awkward! It’s a kiss on the cheek Dadima. She was saying goodbye don’t call me! She softened the blow with a kiss on the cheek.” Raj gave a dirty look to Varun who had turned bright red with the effort of not bursting into laughter.

“Well that’s funny because her mother called me this morning, inviting us for dinner this evening. If she didn’t like you then why would she ask her mother to call?” Mrs Gupta looked like the cat who had swallowed the canary - she was positively beaming!

“Please tell me you said no.” Raj was desperately hoping he wouldn’t have to endure another night like last night. “Plus what about Atif Khan?”

“Her mother mentioned this actor she’s been linked to. She said he has employed her to do a few of his parties, and the media had an absolute field day. You yourself have now had a taste of what the media can be like,” she said pointedly.

“We will be having dinner at the Singhs’ tonight at 8. Varun you will come too.” Dadaji interjected. There was no arguing with Dadaji.

Raj felt frustrated. He glanced across at Varun, who looked crestfallen.

Chapter 36 - Wednesday 10.30am

Raj was showered and dressed, he walked into Varun’s suite and decided to get revenge for all the times Varun had woken him unpleasantly. He poured some water from the jug into a glass that was on the side table and silently walked towards Varun’s sleeping form.
He pulled back the covers and threw the water at Varun head!

Varun screamed and jumped out of the bed while shaking off the water. “Why man? Just why?” he asked Raj while looking for a towel to dry off with.

Raj couldn’t respond, he was laughing too hard.

“You know you suck right!” Varun had begun to see the funny side. “You realise this is war!”

“I’m sorry man, it was just so easy!” Raj said between chuckles.

“After all I’ve done for you, this is how you thank me.” Varun said, drying off.

“And what have you done for me?”

“I’ve only gone and sorted you out with a chance to reboot with the lovely Aarti this evening.” Varun said with a bow, in anticipation of the forthcoming applause.

“Allow it man, I’m done with this. I’m better off chilling in London and getting married in my 50’s.” Raj sat down on the sofa and grabbed the remote.

“Although that sounds like an excellent plan. I need you to go out with Aarti so I can score a date with Jas.” Varun stripped off his soaked top, and began making his way towards the bathroom.

“Ah the truth comes out. Your bird only wants to go out with you, if I come too.” Raj said, shaking his head in mock dismay.

“I’m sure they’d both be happy to spend the evening with just me, but I thought we’ve been friends a really long time… so why don’t I throw you a bone!”

Raj exhaled. “Look you know I’ll come for your sake, but don’t expect it to go well. She will probably have a bee in her bonnet about last night.”

“And that’s when you switch on the charm, and make sure it doesn’t impact my date!” Varun said as he closed the bathroom door behind him.

Raj switched the TV on and began channel surfing. He really didn’t understand the point of this evening, but wouldn’t mess up Varun's plans. He just hoped he could get through the meal without any drama. He didn’t know which Aarti would turn up, the sweet funny charming Aarti, or the spoilt brat with bad manners. Regardless he knew one thing, Aarti was not his type. He’d already had a relationship with a high maintenance girl in the form of Payal, and he didn’t need history to repeat itself.

Chapter 35 - Wednesday 7.30am

Aarti: Please tell me yesterday was a bad dream.

Jasmin: Sorry babe, I can’t.

Aarti: Well what now?

Jasmin: We go to dinner with them tonight and you sort things out ;)

Aarti: WTF?!

Jasmin: Varun texted me last night, he suggested a double date. I’ve said yes. So make sure you bring your A game.

Aarti: I’m not sure I can do this. I’d rather just get over him and move on.

Jasmin: Really hun? You’re going to let Priti win?

Aarti: She’s already won. He walked out with her.

Jasmin: Only because you snubbed him.

Aarti: What do you want from me?

Jasmin: Come on this double date and be yourself.

Aarti: Why are you so invested in this?

Jasmin: Because he’s a good guy and i know how much you like him. What’s the worst that can happen?

Aarti: Fine!

Jasmin placed her phone on her bedside table, pulled her covers off, stood up and stretched. She was exhausted. Last night had been a disaster. Varun had been charming and warm, but Jasmin would not go there. She had no intention of having a long distance relationship no matter how attractive she found him. Tonight was all about Aarti and Raj. Jasmin was convinced that, recent hiccups notwithstanding, they were a perfect match and she was willing to do anything she could to make them realise this. Jasmin picked up her phone once again.

Jasmin: Shall I pick you up at 8 tonight for our date ;)

Varun: Ooh… I like the idea of you picking me up… what shall I wear?

Jasmin: Wear something pretty, and I’ll wine you and dine you, lol.

Varun: Done. You have to have me back by eleven. I’m a nice Indian boy.

Jasmin: Of course you are. Don’t forget to bring Raj

Varun: Who’s Raj?

Jasmin: Varun…

Varun: Do I have to? Him and Aarti’s drama is interfering with our blossoming romance…

Jasmin: Varun!

Varun: Wouldn’t it be more fun if it were just the three of us ;)

Jasmin: Varun!!!

Varun: Okay okay, I’ll bring him. So what’re you going to wear?

Jasmin: Nothing special.

Varun: Nothing sounds especially good.

Chapter 34 - Wednesday 1.30am

Varun: Hi, did you get home ok? I was worried.

Jasmin: Varun, I live next door to Aarti, obviously I got home ok!

Varun: You can never be too sure :P

Jasmin: Why do you always text in the middle of the night?

Varun: Because I sleep during the day.

Jasmin: I work during the day!

Varun: You work too hard. You should take a day off tomorrow and show me your city.

Jasmin: I thought you were planning to sleep the day away tomorrow?

Varun: Sleep is over rated.

Jasmin: Sorry I have patients, maybe on your next visit.

Varun: What about tomorrow night, fancy going out for dinner, just the two of us?

Jasmin: I’ll be quite tired and it is a school night.

Varun: Jas are you playing hard to get?

Jasmin: I’m confused. I thought you were annoyed, and now you’re asking me out?

Varun: It wasn’t you who annoyed me.

Jasmin: Aarti? Because she ignored your friend?

Varun: I thought we had addressed this already?

Jasmin: You realise she really likes him. She was reacting because he hadn’t been in touch since the night we met at the restaurant.

Varun: Well, what was her expectation?

Jasmin: That he would text, email, call, etc, etc.

Varun: Ok, I’ll have a word. So back to us… Dinner?

Jasmin: How about a double date?

Varun: Really? We have to take those two or you won’t come?

Jasmin: Yup!

Varun: Why do I always feel so used and abused when I speak with you?

Chapter 33 - Wednesday 1am

MUMBAI MASALA
MR BOLLYWOOD’S GIRL IS ACTING PRITI SHADY!

Hi Dolls,

Word on the street is Socialite Priti Singh (Singh Gold and Diamonds Centre) previously reported to be dating ‘Mr Bollywood’ Atif Khan was seen last night in the arms of a new man.

She was first spotted by our sources at a party in Breach Candy with a tall dark and handsome guy, let’s call him Mr X. They were inseparable. Apparently they flirted for an hour and then they left the party early together. Party attendees said their chemistry was palpable! They were later spotted at the Singh mansion, doing all sorts on the doorstep (get a room guys!), until finally they went inside. Twenty minutes later (unimpressive if you ask us) Mr X was seen leaving alone.

Priti has allegedly been dating Atif for over six months, neither have confirmed the relationship, but they both seem to go to the same places at the same time (well isn’t that convenient) and end up spending most evenings chatting to only one another. One has to ask how Atif is feeling about his girl straying?

Atif seems to be a one woman guy, despite his huge success, his date to all his premieres has been none other than his mother (awww….). Despite the early struggles (his father passed away when he was only three and his mother raised him and his four brothers alone) followed by emphatic success (no elaboration needed there!) he has always been an absolute gentleman. All his leading ladies call him ‘the chivalrous charmer’ so you have to wonder why Priti is choosing to play the field?

We will keep you informed as we find out more…

DESI DAY & NIGHT
ATIF’S PRITI PISSED!

Bollywood heart throb Atif Khan has been two timed by his girlfriend Priti Singh. Priti was spotted with another man last night. Sources have suggested that the pair have met before behind Atif’s back.

Atif’s representatives have declined to comment. But sources suggest that Atif is beyond upset. But one has to wonder who this guy is that Priti would even dream of cheating on our handsome hunk?

BOLLYWOOD BUZZ
ATIF KHAN & PRITI SINGH ARE OVER

Priti Singh (heiress to the Singh Group fortune) was last night spotted with Raj Gupta. Sources reveal that Raj is the son of her mother’s close college friend.

Allegedly Raj came to their house last week with a marriage proposal which it seems Priti has accepted… but what about our handsome hunk… Atif?

Atif and Priti never publicly defined their relationship, but they were inseparable for over six months. She planned the launch party for his last premiere three weeks ago, and also planned his birthday party the month before. One has to wonder what has happened for them to fall apart so quickly, and for Priti to want to marry abroad with her handsome new man?!

Priti was flabbergasted, she clicked from window to window. How did they know Raj’s name? How could they possibly know he had come to the house and met her parents?

Priti pushed her laptop off her lap and leaned back against the headboard, massaging her temples. She reached for her phone on the night stand and began composing a text message:

Priti: OMG Atif I’m so sorry. I didn’t realise the paparazzi were following me.

Atif: Why are you apologising, we’re just friends!

Priti: I know but they’re saying I’m cheating on you, and obviously that doesn’t look good.

Atif: Don’t worry yaar! Any publicity is good publicity. This way I will look like the poor bechara, cheated on by his pretty girl… I’m fine with that.

Priti: But I look like the cheating cow, breaking India’s heart. How is this good for me?

Atif: It is good for you Priti, use this momentum to get word out about your business. Don’t be dependent on your parents for clients because you know how your mum likes to control you.

Priti: You’re right, but I’m still gutted I look like the cheater and meanwhile no one knows about your wife!

Atif: Lol… ironic I know, but wives aren’t good for business :P

Priti put her phone down and closed her eyes. What now? She was too exhausted to care.

Chapter 32 - Tuesday 10pm

Priti’s hands dropped to her sides, she looked up at Raj and whispered “Raj, can you please come inside, we need to talk.”

Raj wanted this night to end. It had seemed so full of promise and now just seemed to be like the never ending story! He shrugged “Ok, lead the way.”

Priti pushed open the front door and entered. She called out to a maid, and asked her to lead Raj to the drawing room, while she disappeared up the stairs.

Raj sat down on the armchair, and made himself comfortable. He pulled out his mobile phone from his pocket.

Raj: Where you at?

Varun: Still at the party, what about you?

Raj: Priti’s place.

Varun: You move fast :P

Raj: No bro, it’s not what you think, she’s invited me in to give me the brush off!

Varun: Sorry man, she seemed cool, I thought she liked you.

Raj: She’s coming back. Be home in a while. Gym tonight?

Varun: Yup!

Priti reentered the room, dressed in a pair of jeans and a casual pink sweater. Her hair was in a high pony tail and face was scrubbed free of makeup. Raj thought she looked even better than before. But he didn’t dare breathe a word. He watched as she sat opposite him in the love seat and called for the maid to bring tea and snacks.

She inhaled audibly and then began “Raj I don’t know if you realise but when we were outside, the paparazzi took a picture of us. Did you notice the flash?”

“I can’t say that I did.” Raj answered, slightly confused. He hadn’t thought Priti was the conceited type and he was beginning to wonder where this conversation was going?

“I saw the flash, and I’m fairly certain the society pages will run those pictures tomorrow, if it’s not online within the next few hours.”

Raj stared at Priti as though she had just grown a second head. “How famous are you?” he asked perplexed.

“It’s not me who is famous,” she said while nervously playing with her watch. “It’s Atif Khan, you know the actor Aarti was referring to, the one I’m linked with. They’re going to suggest I’m cheating on him with you. Just to be clear he and I are not dating. We are friends and tend to frequent the same places.” She didn’t know why she was reassuring him, but she felt like she should.

“If you aren’t dating, what’s the problem? I’ll be gone by Saturday, they'll realise we are just friends and it’ll all blow over. Also how clear can that image be, it’s dark outside. You’re panicking for no reason Priti.”

Priti felt reassured, he made her feel safe. “Do you think?”

“Yes Priti. I doubt they have anything worth printing, what could they possibly find out about me? Also who would cheat on Atif Khan? Even I know he’s Bollywood gold right now.”

“You’re right. I’m being silly. I was about to call Atif and give him a heads up… but I’m sure you’re right. Thanks Raj. you’re a good friend.”

Raj stood up. “On that note, I’m off.”

“Don’t you want to stay for tea?” she asked, a note of disappointment creeping into her voice.

Raj smiled wistfully, realising this was probably the last time he would ever see her. “Next time.”

Chapter 31 - Tuesday 9.30pm

Aarti was in shock! She couldn’t believe he’d walked out with Priti. She hated Priti. Growing up Aarti had always lived in Priti’s shadow. Aarti hadn’t wanted to go to boarding school in London and Mrs Chaudhury had been livid. Priti was four years older than Aarti, and everything she did, Mrs Chaudhury would try to make Aarti do. Priti did ballet, Aarti did ballet, Priti did gymnastics, Aarti did gymnastics. Thanks to her mother her life had been centred around keeping up with Priti Singh!

Aarti sat on the sofa beside Jas and Varun, who were chatting away amiably. She was trying to be as normal as possible and join in where she could. She felt like someone had punched her in the gut. Jas could feel the sorrow radiating out of Aarti and she desperately wanted to console her, but was acutely aware of the fact that Varun and Raj were extremely close and she didn’t want to say or do anything that would upset Aarti further.

Varun smiled at Jas “So Jas, have you ever considered moving to London, I need a new dentist.”

Jas laughed out load “You want me to move to London, just so I can take care of your teeth?”

“You would be my favourite dentist!” he winked.

“So I wouldn’t be your only dentist?” she asked, feigning outrage.

“I’m a one dentist kind of guy, I don’t know what you’re suggesting but I’m offended and I..”

Aarti drew in a deep breath and turned to Varun and interrupted him mid sentence “Varun your friend Raj is a moron!”

“Pardon?” Varun was completely taken aback. He realised Aarti was disappointed but wasn’t she the one who had snubbed Raj?

“How could he just walk out with Priti Singh, after my family invited him here. He’s rude!” she said assertively.

“To be fair Aarti, no one seemed to care if he was here or not. It’s not like you came to speak to him when he first arrived.” Varun tried to speak as gently as possible to detract from the harshness of his words.

“That’s not the point. We have invited him and his family for a nice dinner and he’s just walked out, with no regards as to how bad that looks. Clearly he wasn’t taught any manners.” Aarti was fuming, and for some reason it seemed like a good idea to take out her frustrations on Varun.

Varun had had enough. Aarti was behaving like a spoilt brat. He didn’t want to have this conversation in front of Jas, but if he had to, he would. he straightened his back, looked her in the eye, and spoke softly but sternly. “Aarti, forgive my honesty but if any one has shown a lack of manners it has been you. He arrived and you didn’t greet him. You saw him and walked out. When you decided to finally come and say hello, you insulted Priti. You spoke about Priti’s private life, and now you are bashing Raj behind his back. With all due respect, you haven’t been the best host.”

Aarti was lost for words. She hadn’t expected Varun to be so direct. He came across as very easy going, but underneath that jovial flirty exterior was a certain steeliness.

Jas had always been Aarti’s support network, but in this instance felt as though she agreed with Varun. But seeing Aarti recoil with hurt, she had no choice but to stand up for her best friend. “Varun you’re being harsh. Raj could have stayed, but he chose to leave. That wasn’t very gentlemanly.”

Varun stood up, he spotted Dr Gupta senior across the room “Ladies lets agree to disagree. If you’ll excuse me Dadaji is on his own, so I will go and sit with him.” He strode across the room without waiting for the girls to respond. Varun was seething, how dare Aarti suggest Raj was anything but a good guy. Jas was just as bad in his opinion, she should have set her friend straight rather than accept such poor behaviour.

Varun sat down next to Dadaji “You having fun?” he asked quietly.

Dadaji smiled at Varun “Not really. Raj left with the Singh girl without even telling us.” Dadaji stated matter of factly “I thought he liked Dr Chaudhury’s daughter?”

“He did until she snubbed him.” Varun whispered.

“He should have said good bye to his hosts, it would have been the correct thing to do.” Dadaji suggested.

Varun nodded because he really didn’t know what to say, his evening was going from bad to worse. He wished he had left with Raj and Priti.

“At least his mum will be happy.” Dadaji chuckled to himself.

Aarti sat staring at Jas “Sorry! I shouldn’t have unloaded on Varun like that. I should have left you two to it.”

“Aarti what came over you tonight?” Jas asked animatedly “he wasn’t wrong, you were rude! From the moment they arrived you behaved like a child.”

Aarti sat back, exhausted and deflated. “I know…. I’m an idiot!”
